Solar Eclipse 2027: Your Guide to the Best Viewing Locations

The 2027 total solar eclipse is set to be one of the most extraordinary celestial events of the century. With an incredible maximum totality of 6 minutes 23 seconds, the eclipse shadow will sweep across parts of North Africa and the Middle East on 2 August 2027, offering exceptional viewing opportunities in some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes.

For travellers, photographers, astronomers and eclipse chasers, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As specialists in eclipse travel, Astro Trails has been studying this event for years.

Solar Eclipse 2027

Why the 2027 Eclipse Is So Remarkable

The 2027 eclipse stands out for several reasons:

  • This will be the longest total solar eclipse of your lifetime

  • The next longest total eclipse will not occur until 2186

  • A high-elevation Sun — superb for photography and scientific observation

  • Ideal climate zones, including some of the Earth’s driest desert regions

  • A path that passes through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen

Very few eclipses combine long totality, excellent weather prospects and such iconic surroundings.

The eclipse also presents an opportunity for many thousands of citizen scientists to observe and record the event across a wide region.

Where Totality Will Be Visible

On 2 August 2027, the path of totality will cross:

  • Morocco

  • Algeria

  • Tunisia

  • Libya

  • Egypt

  • Saudi Arabia

  • Yemen

These regions experience extremely low cloud cover in August, making this eclipse one of the most reliable for clear-sky viewing.

Here’s a quick snapshot of a few highlights:

Morocco

See the eclipse from a beautiful coastal location and enjoy a tour of this colourful country.

Luxor, Egypt

The longest duration of totality — a city on the Nile with deep connections to ancient civilisations.

Siwa Oasis

Egypt’s remote Western Desert offers quiet isolation and a virtually guaranteed clear sky.

Tunisia

Viewing near the coast on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Red Sea Coast

A luxury resort region with cool sea breezes, dramatic horizons and excellent reef snorkelling.

What About Weather & Visibility?

The 2027 eclipse is perfectly placed for great viewing thanks to:

  • Very low average cloud cover

  • Dry desert climate zones

  • High atmospheric stability

  • Low humidity across much of the path

Solar eclipse weather expert Jay Anderson summarises it beautifully:

“Cloud cover for this eclipse is among the lowest I’ve analysed over the last 45 years, and it’s easy to lose sight of that when the detailed statistics are inspected up close. Just about anywhere will present a good to excellent opportunity to see this event and bathe in over 6 minutes of totality. Dust is a threat in most areas, but only an occasional serious problem. If you want a guarantee, I’d suggest Siwa Oasis or the Bahariya Oasis (Batwi), both in Egypt, which have almost no prospect of cloud and seem to be relatively immune from dust storms. Benghazi similarly looks like a very good site.”
