Santiago de Compostela Cathedral Spain - 2026 Total Solar Eclipse
Gijon

Day 1 (8th August 2026) - Arrival in the Northern Spanish city of Bilbao (B)

Arrive in Bilbao and spend the next three nights in this industrial port city. Bilbao is the de facto capital of the Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which sparked revitalization when it opened in 1997. The museum houses prominent modern and contemporary works, but it’s the curvy, titanium-clad building that receives the most attention.

Days 2 to 3 (9th to 10th August 2026) - Days at leisure in Bilbao with optional excursions available (B)

Bilbao combines a stylish vintage district, an industrial heritage, and stunning modern architecture in one of the largest cities in northern Spain. Part of the Basque region, the city sits on the banks of the Nervión River that flows into the Bay of Biscay. Stroll through Casco Viejo, the Old Town of Bilbao, be impressed by the futuristic architecture of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, snack on pintxos - the Basque version of Spanish tapas or take a river cruise through the history of the city.

Day 4 (11th August 2026) - Travel by coach along the Atlantic Coast to Gijon (B)

Today travel west along the Atlantic Coast to Gijón, via the cave of Altamira, famous for its magnificent prehistoric paintings and engravings. We continue onto Gijón which will be your base for the next two-nights and is known for its maritime heritage and the old fishermen’s quarter of Cimadevilla. Santa Catalina hill has a clifftop park and sculpture. The 18th-century Revillagigedo Palace houses an international arts centre and adjoins the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, now a concert hall. Nearby is the 16th-century Clock Tower, with a museum about the city.

Day 5 (12th August 2026) - Eclipse Day - travel to San Pedro de la Ribera, our base for the eclipse (B, L)

Today we travel to the dramatic cliffs overlooking San Pedro de la Ribera, a magnificent beach very near Cudillero. This area is our base for observing the eclipse. Later this evening travel back to Gijon for another overnight in the city.

Day 6 (13th August 2026) - Continue onwards by coach to Santiago de Compostela (B)

Today travel further along the Atlantic Coast to Santiago de Compostela for a two-night stay. Santiago de Compostela is the capital of northwest Spain’s Galicia region. It is known as the end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and the alleged burial site of the Biblical apostle St. James. His remains reputedly lie within the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, consecrated in 1211, whose elaborately carved stone facades open onto grand plazas within the medieval walls of the old town.

Day 7 (14th August 2026) – Day at leisure in Santiago de Compostela with optional excursions available (B)

This famous pilgrimage site became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. The oldest monuments are grouped around the tomb of St James and the cathedral, which contains the remarkable Pórtico de la Gloria.

Day 8 (15th August 2026) - Join your return flight or perhaps extend your stay (B)

Today is the last day of the tour. Join your return flight unless you have chosen to extend your stay.
